’tis the season to be jolly. As we gear up for the holiday season, it’s also time to remember that December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. With all the festivities, it’s important to keep our roads safe.
Why It Matters
Impaired driving is a big deal—accounting for nearly one-third of traffic fatalities in the U.S. Sadly, December sees a spike in these incidents as people celebrate with a drink (or two). It’s important to note that impaired driving includes more than just alcohol.
How to help
Here are a few simple ways municipal clerks can help:
- Spread the Word: Share info about the dangers of impaired driving through your newsletters or social media. A little awareness goes a long way! NHTSA, TSM, and other dedicated organizations can help with resources.
- Engage Your Boards and Committees: Your board and committee volunteers are already committed to improving their community. Let them help. OnBoardGOV can simplify the communication process.
- Encourage Safe Celebrations: Remind folks to plan ahead for safe rides home—whether that’s a designated driver or a rideshare app.
- Team Up with Local Police: Work with law enforcement to promote safe driving. Does the Chief or a liaison sit on one of your boards?
- Team Up with Local Businesses: Bars, liquor stores and restaurants, of course. Medical providers, sure. Any local business can sponsor a campaign/contest or even put a sign in the window. Again your boards and commissions – and your chamber of commerce – are great resources for participants.
Make a Difference!
This holiday season let’s bring our communities together in safety. By spreading awareness and encouraging responsible choices, we can make sure everyone has a joyful and safe celebration. Cheers to that!
